What is the job of a biotechnologist

Profession as

Your many years of study should already have given you an impression of the demands that your future career as a biotechnologist will place on you, regardless of whether you have completed a bachelor of science, biochemistry or biotechnology degree. You have to work precisely in the laboratory. The volumes used are often very small, which is why undesired fluctuations can severely affect the results later. This not only destroys a single experiment, but often entire series of experiments that can drag on for hours, days or even weeks. For daily laboratory practice, a steady hand is recommended in order to properly and accurately load the gel electrophoresis or SDS gels and to get clear images later. A clean and responsible way of working not only guarantees you the necessary safety standards in the laboratory, but also your colleagues. You should always be aware of this responsibility when working with chemicals or genetically modified organisms.

Scientific research is of course also a craft, but that shouldn't be your motivation. You should bring a desire for research, natural curiosity and a spirit of discovery to work at universities, institutes or research departments of companies. For the scientific work there you should have at least a master’s degree, large and own projects as well as the team management are reserved for the doctors, after all, their share is very high at up to 75 percent.

You repeat your numerous attempts in the profession as a biotechnologist over and over again. This will increase the size of the data set and your results will show greater significance. However, not all results are conclusive or unambiguous at first glance. Logical-analytical thinking helps you to interpret the results quickly and meaningfully. If you proceed in a systematic and organized manner, you will save time and material and save yourself from unnecessary work steps or missteps. The more practical experience you have, the easier it will be for you to start your career. In addition to the compulsory internships and courses at the university, activities as a HiWi or in a company pay off. This way, you can get your job started much faster, and as a biotechnologist you can expect the fastest career start among biologists.

In our modern sense, biotechnology is a very young branch of research in biology and is constantly developing. The existing knowledge grows exponentially and new techniques and methods establish themselves again and again. “Everything used to be better”, you leave that kind of thinking to the older generation, because you have to follow the scientific development step by step. Reading publications and journals on a daily basis is part of your daily duties. In this way you stay up to date in the job of biotechnologist and can bring other results to your research and development. A good knowledge of English is an absolute must, because nothing leads around the millions of "paper" anymore.
