Before you travel to Thailand, you are sure to ask yourself how to find the best accommodation for you. This is especially true if you are traveling as a backpacker or individual tourist and you have to look for something nice to stay overnight for at all stages of your trip. I already give a few general tips in my article on hotels and accommodations in Southeast Asia.

Thailand: Hotels and Accommodation

Thailand: book hotels on site

In the past I almost never booked in advance in Thailand, although it has been very easy for years. I actually prefer to look around first on site and then evaluate the price, location and condition of the room / bungalow. So far I have almost always found satisfactory accommodation.

But times change. During the high season, the most beautiful destinations in Thailand get very crowded. In particular, the cheap and medium-sized accommodations are quickly booked out. This is also due to the fact that more and more travelers are now reserving a room in advance. You can find the pros and cons here. The situation around public holidays in Thailand is similar.

Due to the high demand for the popular accommodations, I have also changed my travel behavior a little and book more often in advance on the Internet. I usually find the best prices at Agoda.

The costs for simple rooms start at 200 to 400 baht. For air conditioning (aircon) you usually pay at least 500 baht. Well-kept rooms with room service or beautiful bungalows often start at 800 - 1,200 baht. Unfortunately, it is not possible to give an exact guideline because how much you have to pay depends very much on the time and place.

By the way, there are now fewer and fewer hotels where free Wi-Fi is not part of the standard. In particular, simpler accommodations targeting young travelers can no longer avoid it.

If you are looking for cheap accommodation, you should get your own travel lock as lockers are often provided in the lobby area for valuables. A mosquito net can also be used in this case be useful, as these are often missing in simple rooms or in poor condition (many holes).

Find cheap hotels / cheap accommodation in Thailand

If you want to get by with very little money as long as possible, a bed in a dormitory may be the right thing for you. With two to three euros you can get a place to sleep here.

Hostels / guest houses in Thailand

Many hostels have 2- to 8-bed rooms. In addition, there is often a common room or terrace that you can hang out on.

Guesthouses are simple accommodations without traditional hotel services. Often there is no restaurant and the rooms are only cleaned after your departure. But there are also guest houses with room service.

The operators of the accommodations in the inexpensive to medium segment do not always want to know how long you are staying. Then it is quite common to pay day-by-day, i.e. every day for the coming night.

Mid-range hotels / boutique hotels in Thailand

The largest range is available in this price range. Televisions, air conditioning, hot water, and a refrigerator have become standard in many places.

Thailand: hotels and bungalows on the beach

Is there anything better than being able to look out over the sea directly from the window or terrace of your bungalow? This is possible in many places in Thailand. In the meantime, more and more mat and wooden bungalows in such exclusive locations are disappearing and are being replaced by (more expensive) stone buildings. Nevertheless, you can still rent your Sea-View bungalow on islands like Koh Tao for around 10 euros.

Luxury hotels in Thailand

With the necessary change, you can fulfill your luxury dreams in Thailand. Whether a suite with a breathtaking view of the metropolis of Bangkok or bungalows with marble bathrooms directly in the sea, all wishes will be fulfilled.

Here you can find out which cards you can use to withdraw cash free of charge worldwide and pay in local currency at no additional cost. Hotels & Accommodation in Thailand: How to Save Money!

If you are staying longer, i.e. from 4-5 nights, it is worth asking about a discount. It won't be so easy in the high season, but you can save a lot in the low season. So just ask (of course, directly on arrival and not at the end of the payment process)!

In the case of high-priced accommodations, it is sometimes cheaper to book online. There are always promotions, specials, etc. on the resort's homepage or on booking platforms.

If you have not booked in advance and are not traveling alone, I would first look for a nice café at the destination. One person takes care of the luggage, the other person goes out and looks at the accommodations. Believe me, sweating with a backpack on your shoulders and a travel guide in hand, you are a popular victim of people smugglers who want to show you a “very cheap bungalow”. Find one yourself, and it's guaranteed to be cheaper.
