Burt Reynolds was a good actor

"A boiled rascal" : US actor Burt Reynolds is dead

Hollywood dismay and grief following the death of Burt Reynolds: the film actor who made a splash on the silver screen and as a sex symbol in the 70s and 80s, has died at the age of 82. "My uncle was not just a film icon, he was a generous, passionate and sensitive man who lived for his family, friends, fans and his drama students," wrote Reynolds' niece Nancy Lee Hess on Thursday in a statement published in the German press Agency presented.

Reynolds had health problems, but his death was "completely surprising" for the family, said Hess. According to his manager, the actor died in a hospital in Jupiter, Florida, the Hollywood Reporter reported. Cardiac arrest was named as the cause of death.

Numerous colleagues paid tribute to Reynolds as an actor and as a person. "A sad day, my friend Burt Reynolds has died," wrote Sylvester Stallone on Instagram. "I will always love you," said Dolly Parton on Instagram about a photo of the duo from the film "The Most Beautiful Whorehouse in Texas" (1982). Together with millions of his fans all over the world, she will always keep his smile, his sparkle in the eyes and his weird humor in mind. "He's part of my story and my heart for as long as I live," said Sally Field, Reynolds' former girlfriend in the 1970s and co-star of the action comedy "A Rough Rascal."

"Burt Reynolds was one of my heroes," wrote Arnold Schwarzenegger on Twitter. “He pioneered the transition from athlete to highest paid actor, and he's always inspired me.” Reynolds had been a football player before he started acting. Tennis legend Boris Becker praised Reynolds as "one of the last icons in Hollywood".

Eventful career

In the western series "Smoking Colts" Reynolds was seen as farrier Quint Asper for a long time in the 1960s. Especially in the 70s and 80s, Reynolds was a box-office magnet in Hollywood. Thrillers such as “Everyone is the first to die” and “Ein Auskochtes Schlitzohr” became hits. The Michigan-born actor never won an Oscar, but a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for “Boogie Nights” in 1998. In it he played a porn film producer.

Reynolds life was a rollercoaster, despite millions in fees, which also included bankruptcy declarations and a headline-grabbing divorce from colleague Loni Anderson. In addition to his marriage to Anderson, one of his biggest mistakes was a shellless appearance on a bearskin. In 1972 Reynolds was the first man to be seen naked in Cosmopolitan magazine. The former sex symbol later moved to Florida from Hollywood. There he ran an acting school.

Most recently, Reynolds was to appear alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood". In May it became known that director Tarantino wanted to give Reynolds the role of an old rancher on whose farm Manson and his followers had lived for several months for his film at the time of the hippie revolution and a series of murders instigated by Charles Manson. Filming had recently started, but Reynolds hadn't finished his scenes yet. "My uncle was really looking forward to filming with Quentin Tarantino and the amazing cast," said his niece's message on Thursday.

She wanted to thank Reynolds' fans who always supported and cheered him on "the hills and valleys" of his life and career, wrote Hess. In this "very difficult time" the family is now asking that their privacy be respected. (dpa)
